Workshop: E-books + E-Readers+ E-journals = E-education?
to be held at the 6th European Conference on Research and Advanced Technology for Digital Libraries http://www.ecdl2002.org
September 19, 2002 - Pontifical Gregorian University, Rome, Italy

Aims and themes of the workshop

The aim of this workshop is to attract the attention of researchers and practitioners involved in electronic publishing in a broad sense and from various perspectives including both academia and industry. The development of e-book standards, the accessibility provided by the Web as a platform for distribution and use, the popularity of mobile devices such as PDAs, and the increasing demand for distance learning courses that include e-books and other digital materials as learning objects, have made electronic books a quite popular product. But the development, distribution and use of e-books also impose a wide variety of problems and issues, including new interaction models, design principles, copyright and security issues, accessibility, and so on. One of the aims of this workshop is to raise awareness in a larger research community of various opportunities and problems related to the production of electronic books and their use, specifically in education. Contributions are solicited on, but not limited to, the following topics:

  • design of electronic books
  • electronic and Web publishing platforms
  • interaction models for e-books
  • e-book usability
  • accessibilty
  • new devices for reading electronic books
  • e-books and e-learning
  • e-commerce and electronic books
  • adaptive e-books
  • multimedia and hypermedia writing
  • e-journals
  • new roles of publishers, book stores and libraries
  • emerging standards for electronic books
  • legal issues
  • evaluation of electronic books

Suitably revised and extended versions of papers presented in the workshop will be published in a special issue of the Journal of Digital Information (http://jodi.tamu.edu) following its normal refereeing procedure.

Intended audience

We would expect participants from the academic, industry, library, as well as from the publishing (traditional and electronic) communities. We are asking possible participants to e-mail us with a short profile describing the nature of their interest in e-books and electronic publishing so that we could make sure the event would satisfy their expectations.
