Scope

The written word has shaped the cultures of East Asia for over 3,000 years, and in printed form it has been a cultural mainstay for longer than anywhere else on earth. When it comes to digitization and electronic dissemination, East Asia is again at the cutting-edge of technological innovation. This issue of JoDI will look at some of the largest and most advanced digital libraries projects in East Asia. These projects each bring to the digital world a portion of the vast pre-Modern Chinese language corpus, such as oracle-bone carvings dating from as early as the 2nd Millennium BC, and Zen texts from as late as the 18th Century. We will learn not only about the texts but about:

  • digitization of pre-Modern Chinese language texts
  • editorial recension of ancient texts
  • ensuring accuracy over large amounts of data
  • handling non-alphabetic languages in digital format and for Internet broadcast
  • metadata utilization
  • coordinating multiple databases of diverse topics into a single digital library.
The personal library has always been a most precious treasure in East Asia, and it is inevitable that the digital library will come to fill an analogous position.
